Why Food Alone Isn’t Enough Anymore: The Case for Smart Supplementation

Can I be honest with you about something that genuinely frustrates me?

Every day, women are buying supplements because their favorite influencer told them to. Not because they tested their labs. Not because a practitioner looked at their health history and said this is what your body needs. Because someone with a ring light and a discount code said so.

I get it. We trust people we feel connected to. We want to believe that the woman with the glowing skin and the toned arms has cracked some code that we haven’t. But here’s what’s often actually happening in those partnerships: a brand paid her to say it. Full stop. She may have never taken the product. She may not know the first thing about what’s in it. She’s getting a commission, and you’re spending your money on something that may be doing absolutely nothing for you.

Your health is not a marketing opportunity. Your supplement dollars deserve better than a pretty caption.

Here’s what smart supplementation women actually need to know instead.

The Supplement Aisle Is Mostly a Waste of Money

I’ll say it plainly: most of what’s on the shelves at Target, Walmart, and even the health food store is not worth buying.

The supplement industry has almost no regulation. A company can put anything in a capsule, slap a health claim on the label, and sell it without proving it works. Independent testing has found that many popular supplements don’t contain what the label says. Some have contaminants. Some have almost none of the active ingredient listed.

And even when the ingredients are real, the form matters enormously. The magnesium in most drugstore supplements is a form your body barely absorbs. The B12 in most multivitamins is a cheap form that many people can’t even process. The folic acid in most prenatal vitamins is not the same as the methylfolate your body actually needs, as we covered in detail in The Postpartum Nutrient Crash Nobody Warned You About.

You’re not lazy or undisciplined if you’ve been taking supplements and not feeling a difference. You might just have been taking the wrong things in the wrong forms. That’s not your fault. Nobody told you to look deeper than the label.

Why We Need Supplements at All

The fact of the matter is, we live in a world that makes it genuinely hard to get everything we need from food alone.

The soil that grows our food has been depleted over decades of modern farming. Research has shown that the nutritional content of fruits and vegetables has dropped significantly since the mid-twentieth century. The same apple, grown in the same place, has less iron, less calcium, and less vitamin C than it did fifty years ago. The food looks the same. It doesn’t nourish the same.

Add to that the chemicals we’re exposed to every single day. They’re in food packaging, cleaning products, personal care products, and the water we drink. Our bodies work hard to process and clear them. That work uses up specific nutrients faster than most of us can replace through eating well alone.

This isn’t about fear. It’s reality. And once you understand it, taking high-quality supplements stops feeling like an optional extra and starts feeling like basic maintenance for the world we actually live in.

The Two Supplements I Recommend for Everyone

I mean everyone. My clients, their families, myself. I’ve even recommended these for pets, and yes, I’m completely serious.

Digest-A-Meal is the first one. It’s been Optimal Health Systems’ top seller for over twenty years, and there’s a reason for that. Modern food is harder to digest than it used to be. Processing, additives, and the way crops are grown all of it puts a strain on our digestive systems. Digest-A-Meal provides the plant-based enzymes and probiotics your body needs to actually break down what you’re eating and absorb the nutrition from it. Because food you can’t digest properly isn’t feeding you. It’s just passing through.

Chemzyme is the second one. This one addresses something that didn’t even exist as a product category until recently: phthalate detoxification. Phthalates are chemicals found in plastics, food packaging, cosmetics, and processed foods. They’re nearly impossible to avoid completely in modern life, and they’re known hormone disruptors. Chemzyme contains Phthalazyme, the first and only enzyme specifically designed to detoxify phthalates. It also supports digestion and nutrient absorption. In a world drowning in plastic, this is not optional in my mind. It’s daily maintenance.

Those two together are what I think of as the foundation. Whatever else your body needs on top of that is individual. But everyone benefits from being able to digest their food and clear the chemicals they’re exposed to every day.

Why I Use Optimal Health Systems

Not all supplement companies are built the same. And after years of looking, I found one I trust completely.

Optimal Health Systems was founded by Doug Grant, a nutritionist who spent his career working with elite athletes, including a decade as the nutritionist for the Phoenix Suns. He built OHS around a philosophy I share completely: your supplements should be based on what your body actually needs, not what’s trending.

OHS makes whole-food-based supplements. Real food sources. No synthetic chemicals. Non-GMO ingredients. Third-party tested. They’ve been serving doctors and patients since 1997, and they haven’t sold out to the mass market or compromised their formulas to cut costs.

What I also love is that OHS covers the whole family. Not just women. Not just athletes. Everyone.

OHS for the Whole Family

I think of Elevate Women’s Wellness as a resource for your whole household, not just you.

For the men in your life, OHS has products specifically designed for men’s health and performance, including the Male Hormonal Balance Pak for men dealing with low energy, hormonal shifts, and the kind of fatigue that comes with age and stress.

A fun lightning-shaped gummy has been formulated with all the essential vitamins and minerals your kids will need. Lightning Vita-Min Gummies are delicious. They’re made from real food without the highly processed ingredients, synthetics, or sugars. The best part is they’re also great for adults who don’t like taking pills or… those of us who like gummy candy.

For gut health across the family, Digest-A-Meal and Chemzyme work for everyone. Kids included. Adults included. Grandparents included. A family that digests well and clears toxins well is a family with a stronger foundation for everything else.

You don’t need to buy supplements from an influencer who doesn’t know your name. You can buy from a practitioner who does.

The Bottom Line

Your health is not a marketing opportunity. Your supplement budget deserves to be spent on things that are made from real ingredients, in forms your body can actually use, based on what your body actually needs.

Stop buying what’s convenient. Start buying what works.
